Your donation will assist the FHAA in the fight against housing discrimination. Highlights of FHAA’s accomplishments are as follows:
PUBLIC EDUCATION & OUTREACH
- Conducted over 600 training sessions, seminars, or workshops.
- Trained over 300 Akron Police Department officers on landlord-tenant rights and responsibilities.
- Developed and distributed brochures, handbooks, and other materials on fair housing, sexual harassment, landlord-tenant rights and responsibilities, advertising, predatory lending, and advertising.
- Wrote articles for several local and countywide newspapers.
- Hosted Your Home, Your Rights, a monthly live radio broadcast. Guests have included Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann, Sara Pratt, former director of HUD’s Office of Investigations, Kim Kendrick, HUD Assistant Secretary for Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity, Duane Greoger, City of Akron Health Department, Greg Sain of Community Legal Aid, Cindy Sich, Summit County Office of Consumer Affairs, and Shanna Smith of the National Fair Housing Alliance.
- Served on housing panels sponsored by the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office.
- Developed and implemented “Brightening Our Future”, a public education program used to educate children and middle schools students about fair housing.
PUBLIC POLICY AND FAIR HOUSING PROMOTION
- Assisted FOX 8 News in promoting the hardships that physically disabled persons encounter in finding accessible housing.
- Partnered with Summit County, the City of Barberton, Willis & Associates, Summit Management, and the National Fair Housing Alliance in support of Fair Housing Month (2007).
- Partnered with Westfield Insurance to promote fair housing and homeownership.
ENFORCEMENT HIGHLIGHTS
- Assisted a Twinsburg, Ohio woman and a Mount Vernon, Ohio woman who were victims of sexually harassment and subjected to eviction action for refusing to give into the landlord’s requests for sexual favors.
- Assisted a Lancaster, Ohio couple and their tenant who were subjected to discrimination and retaliation on the basis of religion and sex. The campground, which was not owned or operated by a church, denied housing to non-Christian home buyers and sought to evict the tenant because she was a divorced woman.
- Assisted a Mogadore, Ohio mother of three children whose application was rejected and her security deposit returned because the landlord did not want to rent to families that had 3 children.
- Assisted a Caucasian Barberton, Ohio man whose lease was terminated 2 days after the landlord discovered that his wife was African-American.
Your donation will enable the FHAA to meet four important goals:
1) Educate both housing providers and tenants on their rights and responsibilities.
2) Expand housing opportunities for home seekers.
3) Eliminate illegal barriers to fair housing choice.
4) Enforce state and federal fair housing laws and regulations.
